Ok, following my previous photo article here on how to get in and change the microSd Card on the HTC Mozart, there has been allot of feedback with thanks to Darren at endgadget for picking it up and posting it .
With many requests for a video of the breakdown, I have now posted one below. I waited until I got my hands on a 32Gb Class 4 card but as you will see it did not work once installed, so I had to do it all over again and go back to my 16GB Class 2 card which has been working perfectly for the last 5 days or so.
Please have a look at the video, it’s my amateur version, so please be gentle about the commentary!
There are Plenty of WARNINGS regarding voiding your warranty so please think very carefully before proceeding at your own risk.
If any of you do decide to carry out this upgrade, please come back and let me know how you get on.
cheers Andy
An excellent video with great, step-by-step guidance. A braver man than me to make the attempt, but great to know it can be done.
Do you know if the 32 gb card wouldnt work because of the larger space or just the fact that its class 4?
No, I don’t know for certain. According to Microsoft the main factor is not necessarily the speed class of the card but rather number of read/write opeartions per second. As far as i can see, there is no spec released as yet.
According to Microsoft……. “Determining whether an SD card is Windows Phone 7 compliant is not a simple matter of judging its speed class. Several other factors, such as the number of random read/write operations per second, play a role in determining how well an SD card performs with Windows Phone 7 devices.” …….. i recently put in a 32 gb class 4 card from SanDisc. It all works like a charm.
As the orginal card was a 16Gb Card from SanDisc it could be that for now only SanDisc cards fullfil MS requirements.
Hey, Glad to hear it all worked for you. Could yopu let us know where you managed to get the SanDisc Class 4 card, best I could find was a SanDisc Class2 only, would appreciate a link if you have one.
Many thanks for letting me know
Cheers
Andy
I was just reading the article on engadget about the sandisk statement and i can only see a class 2 32 gig card like yourself. I dont personally see the point in cracking the phone open for anything less.
Samsung focus has flagged that the kingston class 4 card will work but the sandisk class 2 card is uncertain or unstable. (source: http://wmpoweruser.com/list-of-microsd-cards-confirmed-working-with-the-samsung-focus/ )
Hopefully reldeis will post a link for people who are willing to take the risk, however it may be that different hardware reacts differently to different SD cards.
Hi Andy just wondering what the symptoms of the 32gb card not working were for you as I too have had a simmiliar issue and am curious if I need to give up on the 32GB card I bought.
Cheers
Hi there, my symtpoms were as follows. The card allowed the phone to boot up and get to the OEM screen, after entering date , time, location etc, the first action required was then to enter a live ID, At this stage there was no progress at all, i.e. it just stayed on that screen. Tried reboot and soft and another hard reset, with no joy. If I ignored the llive ID screen and skipped past it would then hang up on the Installing Apps screen and not make any progress. The core OS was working as I received a call during one of these sessions and the phone worked fine. The best I could guess was that the card would not allow a data write and therefore was holding up.
What about your symtoms, it would be good to hear if they were similar and also what type and class of card you were using so we can add it to the list. As you know mine was a Kingston 32GB Class 4
Thanks a lot. Nice guide, very well done.
I changed my SD Card today and everything turned out perfectly well. Thank you!
But you forgot to mention in the video, that the psychological pressure combined with my eyes staring at screws and ribbons and my fingers trying to ‘gently’ force plastikparts off each other causes a serious headache. But: 32 GB. Yay 🙂
Hi Ben,
Great to hear it worked Ok for you despite the headache! Can you let us know what 32Gb card you used as it’s good to know which are performing and which aren’t.
cheers
Andy
No problem, it’s a 32Gb Sandisk Class 2 Card. No problems so far. Speed feels actually similar to the original 8GB Sandisk. Bytheway.. any other methods known than Symbian OS for converting the old card? I think I’ll try it with my Android..
Thanks for the confirmation of a SanDisc Class 2, have seen other positive reports for this card. I have done some analysis of the different cards I have, focusing on non sequential random read / write access, rather than the headline sequential read / write which determines the speed class number, so just compiling an article on that soon.
I have not seen any other methiod yet other than ther than the Symbian / Nokia one. If you have any luck with Android then we would be keen to know.
Cheers
Andy
Many thanks for the article, photos and Videos. White knuckle stuff! – I finally ‘dared where angels fear to tread’ and can report a stable, responsive 32GB Mozart after nearly a week with 15GB taken up with music and music video.
Before reading your articles, I had already ordered a 32GB Sandisk class 2 card , but was surprised to receive a Class 4 (with markings identical to the 8GB card removed). Because I gambled on ordering the card from Hong Kong and the possibility of a fake (been caught recently with a fake Kingston 32GB microSD), CrystalDiskMark 3.0 shows sequential performance exceeding class 4 with a noticeable margin. I’m not sure if the CrystalDiskMark report shows non-sequential random read / write, but comparing my test results with published reviews shows similar results to smaller capacity SanDisk cards in the same class. The product code for my 32GB card is: SDSQ-032G-P36M.
Thats great to hear, the sandisk appears to be the way to go, and it may be good luck that got you a calss 4 card as I haven’t seen these publicly available from Sandisk, I was also caught by a Kinston 32gb which would not tun at all. Its now working fine in my Garmin Zumo 660 as a 32gb stroage card so not all lost.
Well done anyway for completing the upgrade challenge!
Cheers
Andy
Happy to report my upgraded Mozart has continued to be stable with intensive use. I found this comment in the xda-developers forum re SanDisk class 4 32GB microSD’s: jeffgeno

There is a good chance that the ones with Sandisk cards NOT WORKING are using Chinese knock-offs. There are a lot of them out there, so be careful.
A good example is the user on this forum claiming he received a Class 4 card from Sandisk – Sandisk does not make a Class 4 32gb microSDHC card – it is a FAKE!

Here’s the word directly from SanDisk. They are now manufacturing Class 4 cards.
We appreciate your continued response and we will be glad to assist you again. We have received the pictures of your product and after reviewing them, we have found that the card which you are using is a legitimate SanDisk product.
Earlier, we were manufacturing Micro SD and Micro SDHC cards with Class 2 rating only. Currently, we are manufacturing Micro SD and Micro SDHC cards with Class 4 ratings only. The card that you have received from Newegg.com is a new card and it is a class 4 rating card.
I too finally took the plunge after reading with envy that others had successfully managed to upgrade their HTC Mozart to 32gb.
I fluked this with the 1st 32gb card I found (SanDisk (code: SDSDQ-32768-P36M)).
To anyone that isn’t sure about doing this, if you are patient and follow Andy’s instructions, then you can’t really go wrong. Cheers Mate, I couldn’t imagine breaking open a brand new phone without a comprehensive guide, you sir are a braver man than most!
Cheers Vernon, I am really glad it worked for you, I have been using mine now since November, nicely loaded up with mp3s etc and it has not missed a beat. The more I use the new UI the more I like it. In real world use it is simply superb.
Cheers
Andy
It worked a treet Awesome work there andy Cheers
Thanks a lot for the guide!
However, I’d like to warn people that in my phone the 32 GB Sandisk Class 2 microSDHC card I bought (sdsdqm-032g-b35) DID NOT work. Had to buy another new one (16 GB Sandisk Class 4, sdsdqy-016g-u46), which seems to work fine so far. Unfortunately, I could not get hold of a class 4 32 GB card. Maybe later …
Hey Andy and guys, I just bought myself a HTC Mozart from Telstra T8697 with 8GB inside. I had order a ScanDIsk 32GB Class 4 and is on its way. I would like to ask, some people successfully make the 32GB work and some doesn’t. Does the model of the HTC Mozart have something to do with it? Like mine is from Telstra T8697 and there are HTC Mozart T8698 and etc, Asia version, Europe version. Does it matter?
if you have compatibility problems after the new card to the solution is playing while camera photos POWER + button + volume up after the vibration release POWER button, he will tell you if you want to restore and you have to say yes and so will in my case a class 2 32GB sandisk
sorry for my English, good luck
POWER + CAMERA + VOL UP release after the vibration power voton…….new menu with the option to restore
using this method, our HTC mozart can install android?? anybody who upgraded their phone can help try this ??
Very nice guide 😀 i just got my HTC Mozart today, looking forward to expand its storage 🙂 Thanks Andy.
I just keep getting storage card not working error, even during reboot of phone during restore process. I have the option to turn off or emergency. dont want to disconnect phone now as it says not to use or disconnect. what should i do?
I’ve just tried to upgrade the Mozart I picked up second-hand, and regrettably failed on both a 16gb and a 32gb card (I was able to reinstall the 8gb card and restore the phone to apparently full working order, thankfully!). The models which didn’t work for me were:
Kingston 16gb class 2
Sandisk 32gb class 4
Both came up with a message saying that my card was incompatible as the handset finished booting up.
I will look around for a type of card which will work and try again, however, as it was relatively easy to do in the end, and will make a nice device much nicer.
All the best, and thanks for the video assistance.

One question: with mango, memory 32 gb is good? Or are there problems?
Thanks Andy for your guide.
I have followed it and changed my microSD with success, but the only microSD avalaible for the moment is a Kingston 32Gb class4.
And I founded your same issue, apparently hanged on initial apps installation: because it finished its work after over 1 hour!
Same problem installing apps from marketplace, slowly but it complete its job.
Now I bought a Sandisk 32Gb class4, from readers experiences…
I hope to solve this problems of slowness (on apps, clips, etc..).
In the meanwhile thanks and stay tuned! (and sorry for my poor english!)
Done. I think to have completed job.
Sandisk 32Gb Class4 works as well as original, and the microSD used by WP7 (locked), unlocked with a Nokia E71 help. Great!
Now I can think to choose a good turn by turn off-line navigator.
Thanks a lot Andy for your precious guide.
Maybe now you can write a list of supported microSD, based on readers comments?
Thanks again!
This is to confirm that Sandisk 32GB class 4 micro SDHC works with HTC Mozart. But initially I had problems with the phone when dialing a number.
My initial phone setup before the micro SDHC upgrade is Windows Phone 7.5 Mango (7.10.7720.68) with firmware version 2250.21.50001.707 (HTC Southeast Asia official rom).
I guess the problem is due to the Windows Phone OS installing non-Mango apps after doing a factory reset. Specifically HTC Connection Setup, HTC Hub etc. Updating the HTC Apps in the marketplace I think fixed the problem, but again I’m not sure because I also got a new HTC Update for Windows Phone via Zune.
This time the update is for the Internet Sharing (Tethering) with firmware version 2250.21.51001.707.
So there you go, hope this helps to those who wanted to update their Windows Phone Mango
Awesome job mate! Just a quick query. I lost one of the screws…. If the screw to the right of the camera is a silver one, then I lost that one. I’m actually looking to replace the digitizer and LCD – Do you know (or anyone else for that matter) if missing this screw will cause any problems?
Cheers!
